The United States will have two pairs skating in the exhibition gala on Saturday.
The event marks the end of figure skating at the Winter Games in PyeongChang. Performers are invited to do a routine that is free of the regulations and restrictions by the skating federation and do something that expresses their personality.
It is not judged and it is not a competition. It's purely for entertainment, but it is an honor to be invited.
Alex and Maia Shibutani will perform at the gala, which is one of the hottest tickets in PyeongChang. The brother-sister pair dubbed the 'Shib Sibs' won two bronze medals at the Winter Games. Zachary Donohue and Madison Hubbell will also represent the U.S.
Nathan Chen was invited to the event after he landed a record six quads in his short program. However, Chen came down with the flu in PyeongChang and left early to avoid infecting others, according to USA TODAY Sports.
Adam Rippon wasn't invited. His snub is a bit of a surprise despite not medaling in the individual event. It's not only the best who are invited. Crowd favorites have been invited in the past, and Rippon was certainly one of the most popular athletes at the Games among fans and athletes.
Mirai Nagasu was left out despite being the third woman ever to land a triple axel. However, she struggled in her programs. She also made controversial comments regarding the Games being an audition for Dancing With the Stars.
Some of the notable performers at the gala include the top Russian female skaters, Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedev, who went 1-2 on the podium two nights ago.
Gold medal ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir from Canada will perform as well as the French couple, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who suffered a massive wardrobe malfunction but still was able to win the silver.
Finally, the night with be capped by the men's gold medal winner, Yuzuru Hanyu from Japan, who will likely finish to a storm of Winnie-the-Pooh's raining down on him.
