ATLANTA -- Campus and Atlanta police are working together to investigate an armed robbery and carjacking of two area students near Georgia State University early Thursday.

According to police, two students - one from Georgia State and another who wasn't - were sitting in a car near the intersection of John Wesley Dobbs and Courtland Street.

The victims told police that two men approached them asking for directions around 4 a.m. before allegedly taking their car and any other items they could get their hands on.

The victims described both suspects as being around 20 years old. One, a black male, was wearing a beanie hat and the other, a white male, was wearing black pants and a blue hooded sweatshirt.

They took off in the carjacked red Pontiac G6, police said.

"Although this didn't happen on our campus, anything that happens near our campus we get concerned,” Chief Joseph Spillane with Georgia State police said. “We're working closely with the Atlanta Police Department right now and reviewing all of our cameras. Anything to help them figure out who did this crime so close to our campus."

The Atlanta Police Department is the lead agency in this investigation but, due to the crime's proximity to the Georgia State Campus, the university police department is also working with them and keeping a watchful eye on the area.

Meanwhile, students told 11Alive's Neima Abdulahi it's a good reminder to always be aware of their surroundings late at night.

"I think it's unfortunate the people were robbed in that way," said Danielle Kelly. "I think it's not that we live Downtown, it's being aware of your surroundings and using common sense."

A check of CrimeReports.com shows that the area of downtown where the crime happened has been relatively quiet - at least in terms of crime reported to their agency.

Only a handful of theft-related crimes were reported - some from vehicles. However, only one violent crime, an assault was reported in the area. That was on Jan. 18.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Georgia State Police Department at 404-413-2100. Tips can also be provided through the university's LiveSafe App or through the Campus Crime Stoppers Program at 404-577-TIPS.

Campus police are also reminding students that they can call their department to request a security guard or officer to drive or walk them to their destination.
