Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Cobb County

Here's what we know.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County Police said they are responding to an officer-involved shooting at a motel near Six Flags Over Georgia.

According to a spokesperson for the department, the shooting happened around 4:30 Tuesday evening at the Guest Inn Motel at 95 South Service Drive near Austell.

According to Sgt. Wayne Delk, officers were on patrol near the motel and were doing a routine walkthrough of the business.

"We find a lot of criminal activity at those motels," Delk said.

As the officers approached one of the rooms, they reported smelling narcotics. The officers went to the room and spoke to a suspect inside of it, but during their conversation, police said the suspect tried to run away.

The officers followed the suspect to his car, where the suspect got in and tried to drive off. However the officers were dragged by the vehicle. At some point, a tussle broke out, leading one of the officers to pull his weapon out and fire. The suspect was killed.

Police said one of the officers was injured in the incident, but is expected to be OK.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate, as is protocol for officer-involved shootings.
