atlanta — ATLANTA — A library security guard was on patrol inside of her library when police say she was attacked.

Police got the call around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night at The Central library on Margaret Mitchell Square. According to police, the woman was inside the library, after closing, when a man holding a pair of scissors approached her from behind and put the scissors at her neck.

He then allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Police say the victim ran away from the library as the suspect chased her. He eventually stopped chasing, police say, when he saw two other men outside.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Police did not say how the suspect got inside the library after closing because they close at 6 p.m.

In a statement to 11Alive, a spokesman for Fulton County said staff for the library are "participating fully in the investigation."

On Sunday, April 15, an individual hid in Central Library after closing and committed a violent act against a contract security guard. Officers from Atlanta Police Department and Fulton County Police Department responded to the scene. Staff are participating fully in the investigation. At this time, no arrest has been made.

Fulton County Police Department have debriefed with our contract security provider to review all security protocols and guard training. Security has been increased to include an armed guard during Library hours as well as an additional guard overnight. We have also communicated with Library staff about security and safety protocols at Central Library and all library branches.

The Central Library will close later this year for renovation. Investments in the renovated library will allow for major security enhancements, including an expanded security camera system and improved sight lines within the footprint of the Library.
