Child killed in accident involving tractor trailers, passenger car on I-285

Three other people involved were taken to the hospital.

ATLANTA — Authorities confirm a child was killed in a major accident on Interstate 285 that blocked all lanes in the height of rush-hour traffic.

According to East Point Police, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. at I-285 South past Camp Creek Parkway and involved three tractor trailers and a Hyundai Santa Fe.

The Georgia State Patrol told 11Alive there was a confirmed fatality, and that it was a 4-year-old child.

An initial investigation from the GSP indicates the Hyundai and one of the tractor trailers were stopped in traffic, but another approaching tractor trailer did not notice the stopped vehicles ahead.

The GSP said the approaching tractor trailer tried to swerve to avoid hitting the back end of a the first truck, but ended up hitting the rear of the Hyundai. The child was killed as a result.

Three other people involved were taken to the hospital.

GSP said charges are pending.
