COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- GDOT has started to resurface all lanes of I-75 in Cobb County that are not part of the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes project. Officials say this is to address the deteriorating condition of the road's surface.

For the weekend of May 4 to May 6 from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., resurfacing on I-75 will be in full swing.

Here are the lanes that will be blocked:

  • I-75 NB from The River to Delk Road: 2 left lanes
  • I-75 NB from Windy Hill to the North Loop: 3 left lanes
  • I-75 NB HOV ramp to Akers Mill will be closed so use Cumberland Blvd
  • I-75 SB from the North Loop to Delk Rd.: 1 left lane

Use Cobb Parkway as an alternate.

The $34.8 million project will include 11 miles of the interstate from the Chattahoochee River in Fulton County to just north of Allgood Road in Cobb County, as well as I-285 eastbound over I-75 to just west of the Chattahoochee River Bridge, and all ramps and collector-distributor lanes that are not currently included in the Northwest Corridor project.

The projected started on Monday, April 23, road crews began work on the I-75 northbound lanes to the Cumberland Boulevard ramp. Motorists traveling north on I-75 will be directed to the Windy Hill Road exit to turn around and come back to the Cumberland Boulevard exit via I-75 southbound. Digital message boards will be in place to direct traffic.

“We strongly advise motorists to be prepared, plan ahead and know before you go,” said Georgia DOT Metro District Engineer Kathy Zahul. “This highly anticipated resurfacing project will create a smoother and safer ride for all commuters. We ask motorists to please pardon our progress and pack your patience while on the road.”

Over the course of the remainder of the project, other on and off ramps may be closed and detours put in place -- in addition, some temporary lane closures are expected to allow the road work to effectively and safely continue. In order to minimize delays, most lane closures will be limited to night and weekend hours.

These are some of the most highly trafficked areas of roadway in metro Atlanta. Motorists are reminded to reduce speeds in work zones and to plan their trips accordingly.

“Work zones serve as the workplace for GDOT workers and contractors. It is vitally important that they are safe and able to return home to their families as they carry out their duties,” Zahul said.

The project is a joint venture between C.W. Matthews Contracting Company, Inc. and E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. GDOT says the project is expected to be fully completed by February 2019.
