MARIETTA, Ga. — A candidate for the Marietta Fire Chief's position is now facing criminal forgery charges for allegedly falsifying his credentials for the position.

According to the criminal warrant, Robert Hume, a California resident, sent falsified military credentials when applying for the position, which commanded a six-figure salary.

Hume allegedly altered a DD214, a military discharge document, to show he'd earned a Silver Star medal, two Bronze Star medals, a Purple Heart medal, an Armed Forces Expeditionary medal, a Meritorious Service medal, a Soldier's medal, Army Achievement medal, National Defense medal, Combat Medical badge and Expert Field Medical badge.

In addition, he claimed to have obtained the rank of Master Sergeant when the highest rank he actually had obtained was Sergeant.

Hume's reported credentials also included claims of employment with a California fire department that not only no longer exists, but, based on the dates Hume supplied, there is no way he could have worked for the agency when it did exist.

Hume has been charged with first-degree forgery and misdemeanor false statement or representation as a military veteran.

At this stage, a criminal warrant has been secured for his arrest, however, police officials have not been able to obtain extradition paperwork to have Hume brought to Georgia from California.
