SMYRNA, Ga. - Top-prospect Ronald Acuna has been called up to the majors, and he joins the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday in Cincinnati.
Acuna, a 20-year-old outfielder, joins the Braves for their third game in four-game-set against the Reds at the Great American Ball Park. The Braves have lost the first two games of the series.
Acuna's arrival is arguably one the most anticipated Major League debuts baseball has seen over recent years. He will serve as Atlanta's starting left fielder in a lineup that has tallied a National League-high 122 runs without him.
Acuna ranks second only to Angels rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list, according to MLB.com.
Acuna could have been called up as early as April 14, but the Braves decided to hold off from adding Acuna to their opening day roster in order to gain another year of contractual control of the young star.
Acuna opened the season with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers.
There's a possibility Acuna could bat behind Freddie Freeman and as a potential cleanup hitter in Jose Bautista, who could join Atlanta's roster later this week.
