DULUTH, Ga. -- Police are trying to figure out what led up to the gunshot wound that ultimately killed a woman at an apartment in Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Officers responded to the 2300 block of Club Place Drive outside of Duluth, Georgia around 4 a.m. after a neighbor called to report domestic violence. But the scene when they arrived was of something potentially even more heinous.

A woman, identified as 27-year-old Jessica Criff, had been shot during what police now believe was an argument. She was rushed to the hospital but later died. One person, 25-year-old Cortez Lofton, who was the only other person at the home during the crime, was detained and is cooperating with police.

However, police have not said if he was actually the gunman and haven't filed charges.

Officials said Lofton called 911 immediately after the shooting to report the incident and stayed at the scene.

It's not yet clear who lived at the apartment.
