DeKalb County bus drivers' cars broken into while they were on their afternoon routes

It happened Monday afternoon at Buck Godfrey Stadium off Clifton Springs Road in Decatur around 4:30.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Bus drivers who were on their afternoon routes dropping students off at their homes after their school days were done became the victims of crime.

It happened Monday afternoon at Buck Godfrey Stadium off Clifton Springs Road in Decatur between 2 and 4:30.

According to the DeKalb County School District, their police agency is investigating several car break-ins that happened while the drivers were out on their routes. A spokesperson for the district said a thief or thieves targeted 15 cars.

11Alive's Ashley Johnson spoke to some of the drivers, who said this was not the first time they've had to endure break-ins. They're hot over now having to pay out of pocket to get their cars repaired.

Amy Hudson was one of those bus drivers. She said she was driving a bus back to pick up another driver whose car had been broken into. That's when she realized she'd also been hit.

"They stepped into the vehicle, climbed through the window, and with the glass shattering," she described.

Hudson said she is angry about what happened because she just wants to do her job without having to worry about what she'll find when her shift is over. She now has to pay $3,000 for repairs.

"You work hard to pay for what you have, for someone to feel that they’re just entitled to walk in off the street and just destroy your property," she said.

Drivers are now calling for the district to install more security measures to keep them safe.

"There should be some type of precautions taken to make it a little bit easier for us, especially being females and were coming out early in the morning," Hudson said.

In a statement, the district said it "cares about the safety of our bus drivers and the safety of their property" and is working on security enhancements.

"A plan of action is being developed regarding these enhancements," the district concluded.
