Worker trapped by machinery rescued from 120 foot silo

First responders said the worker's safety harness ultimately led to his injuries.

A worker rescued from a 120-foot silo in Gainesville is recovering from serious injuries after being trapped by a safety device.

Gainesville Fire Department spokesperson Keith Smith said that crews were called out to Cargill, Inc. on West Ridge Road around 4:45 p.m. on Friday to reports that an employee's safety harness had become entangled in a piece of machinery.

Fire personnel used elevators inside to get to the worker and found they would need to bring him down since he was unable to walk due to serious injuries.

Additional crew members and equipment were brought up to the location by a crane that was already at the location. After about 30 minutes, the victim and two firefighters were lowered to the ground by crane.

The victim was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Officials said his harness appears to have created pressure around the worker's upper torso and that he was complaining of neck, back, chest and facial pain.
