A school in DeKalb County that earned a failing health score due to both live and dead roaches has cleaned up its act.

Bethune Middle School received a near perfect score following an inspection by the Georgia Department of Health that lasted over an hour-and-a-half.

Earlier in the month, the school received a failing grade due to a number of code violations - "live roach activity" among the most egregious. Both "American" and "German" cockroaches were found in parts of the cafeteria including the serving line and in the dry storage area, according to the report.

The violations also included one instance of an employee picking up trash and throwing it away before picking up a pan of cooked hot dogs. They also noticed a "notable lack" of proper handwashing stations in the restrooms near the cafeteria.

Sanitizing buckets also didn't contain the proper amount of ammonium solution to clean items and several food items weren't properly, cooled the report said.

Roughly a week later, the school cafeteria has come back with a score of 99 out of 100. One point was deducted when the inspector noticed an employee's tartar sauce, pecans and bottled water stored with food to be served to the students. This was relocated to a new spot and fixed on-site but was listed as a new violation.
