ATLANTA — As cold temperatures drop Friday night, warming centers have opened for people who need a safe place to go.
The City of Atlanta opened its center Friday at 6 p.m. It will remain open until Saturday morning.
The warming center is located at the Old Adamsville Recreation Center, 3404 Delmar Lane NW, Atlanta, GA 30331. Men, women and children are welcome.
The Salvation Army is doing the same. The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Services, located at 469 Marietta Street, will open its Cold Weather Program.
The program offers a warm bed to those who have nowhere else to go on nights when the temperature falls below 40 degrees. The 324-bed shelter can take in up to 50 additional people under the program.
“In these extremely cold temperatures, frostbite can set in in as little as 30 minutes,” said Kevin Hall, who oversees The Salvation Army’s Cold Weather Program. “We will do everything we can to make sure those who have nowhere else to stay will be warm at The Salvation Army.”

The Salvation Army operates its Cold Weather Program from January through March on days when the temperature falls below 40 degrees. The warming center at Red Shield is open from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. On extremely cold mornings, the center may stay open longer.
