DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A student is facing serious consequences after being accused of stealing nearly two dozen Social Security numbers.

About 20 students were in a classroom Monday to prepare applications for a nursing certification test when the SSNs were compromised, according to a spokesperson for the DeKalb County School System.

DeKalb County School's police department has opened an investigation into what happened. Meanwhile, officials say the student accused of taking the sensitive information has been identified and now faces consequences.

Officials say they have notified the students whose information was compromised and recommended they contact credit bureaus to protect their credit and identities.

The district said it has also reached out to the Social Security Administration to figure out what other steps can be taken.
