Georgia kids rescued from Canadian mountain

The children - a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl - had to spend the night in the cold while their injured father was forced to leave his two kids to search for help.

BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada — A Georgia family is safe after a "miraculous rescue" from a Canadian mountainside.

According to Canadian outlet CTV News in Vancouver, the family was visiting Burke Mountain in Coquitlam, British Columbia, but somehow got lost on their trek to a nearby lake and slipped down into a steep creek bed.

The children,  a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, had to spend the night in the cold while their injured father was forced to leave his two kids to search for help. After walking roughly 1.25 miles, he came across another hiker and used their cellphone to get help.

CTV reports the Coquitlam Search and Rescue team used air and ground crews to search for the missing kids. They eventually came upon a blue backpack and shoes, which rescuers compared to a "trail of breadcrumbs." It led them to the children, Monday morning.

Crews had to essentially airlift the the children to safety, due to the rugged nature of the terrain.

Rescuers said the children “didn’t say much but they were grinning when we lifted off – so it was pretty cool,” CTV reports

The three were reunited, and admitted to a hospital for treatment. They were released from the hospital later Monday afternoon.

"We're very happy that the search and subsequent rescue concluded successfully!" a representative for the Coquitlam Search and Rescue team told 11Alive in an email.
