Fire causes evacuation at Duluth IHOP

Fire crews found flames coming from the chimney.

DULUTH, Ga. — A grease fire broke out in the kitchen of a Gwinnett County IHOP on Tuesday, causing the restaurant to evacuate.

The fire occurred at the 2100 block of Pleasant Hill Road NW in Duluth. It spread from the kitchen to the chimney by the time fire crews arrived, authorities said.

Fire crews were dispatched just after 11:30 a.m., authorities said. They said the fire started when maintenance was being done on one of the kitchen's two fryers, and the grease inside the fryer got unexpectedly hot and ignited.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, duct system, attic and roof, fire officials said.
