'Summertime is wild time': Residents describe hearing southwest Atlanta drive-by shooting

One man was killed in a shooting on Thursday night on Cascade Avenue in Atlanta.

A man was shot and killed in an apparent drive-by in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday night

The shooting happened around 10:45 p.m., according to witnesses.

Police described shots coming from a vehicle with at least 2-3 people inside as it drove past a house at 732 Cascade Avenue where an adult male had been standing out front.

That man, described by police as being in his 30s, was taken to a hospital where he died from his gunshot wounds.

Brenda and Sean Johnson said they’ve lived in the neighborhood, where they're active in the community association, for a decade, and that this kind of violence is rare.

“We’ve lived here long enough that what’s happening now is definitely not as alarming as what was happening when we first moved in,” Brenda Johnson said.

She said there were upwards of 20 shots that she heard.

“It was one of those things where you think about the time of the year, what time of year is it, is it fireworks?” she said. “But then you hear them in such rapid succession you realize, no, this isn’t fireworks, this is gunshots going on.”

Her husband said there was a similar shooting directed at the same area two weeks ago.

“It’s summertime nonsense. Winter time is robbery time, summertime is wild time,” Sean Johnson said. “It’s Atlanta. Everyone from Atlanta, they know what it is.”

But, he added, “The neighborhood’s been changing, definitely not something that happens frequently over here. This is unfortunately the first homicide we’ve seen.”

The couple said they were primarily concerned with making sure their four children were safe once they heard the shots start ringing out.

Brenda Johnson said she was just glad that, with school out and children typically around riding bikes and scooters in the area, that nobody else was hurt.

“Unfortunately this happened, but you have to thank your blessings there wasn’t a kid or minor caught in the crossfire of what two people thought was important,” she said.

Police are searching for a gray or silver sedan that they believe was involved in the shooting, and were interviewing people in the neighborhood.

They said there was no immediate information about the relationship between the gunmen and the victim, or what the cause of the shooting might have been.
