DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — The summer is starting to heat up, but a special program from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has returned to keep things cool for kids in the county.

The Polar Patrol ice cream truck is back on the roads to brighten kids' days with free sweet treats. One dad and real estate representative Darius Bailey experienced the program first-hand over the weekend while he was out with his family.

"While touring a property today in Douglasville, GA, my wife, son, and I were surprised by Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies who were giving away FREE ICE CREAM as a part of a new community outreach program," Bailey wrote.

He shared video of the encounter of his son posing with one of the Douglas County deputies, who handed the little boy a bracelet and other goodies, besides ice cream.

"Definitely a first for me," Bailey wrote. "A big win for law enforcement."

The sheriff's office told 11Alive this is their third summer with the polar patrol.

The office says the it owns and operates the program, which was started with drug seizure money. It now operates with donations from individuals and businesses in the community.

"During the summer we try to visit as many of the subdivisions as we can as well as some of the local daycares," explains sheriff's office spokesman Jesse Hambrick.

Hambrick says it increases the "positive interaction with law-enforcement" and gives them an opportunity to deputies in a different setting.

Posts from the sheriff's office showed the ice cream truck visiting different communities throughout the county. On Saturday, they were handing out the frozen treats in the Chartlon Crossing neighborhood.
