Bow ties and podcasts: 7-year-old boy balances being a kid with being an entrepreneur

'I want to see other business owners that know more than me so I can get more information and grow my business.'

MCDONOUGH, Ga. — Treandos Thornton arrived at the Chandra Thompson Insurance Agency in McDonough, Georgia with his dad. He left his summer camp program early for this very important appointment.

“I want to visit a lot of businesses out there,” he said.

It is a meeting between one business person and another. But one of them is seven years old.

Chandra Thompson greeted him with a handshake in her office.

“I’m glad you made it,” she said.

She then offered him a seat behind her desk. She's the owner.

Treandos’s mom, Shana helped him set up his laptop on the desk to start the podcast that he created for kid entrepreneurs.

“I have my own business that is called T & N Bow Ties and Apparel,” he said.

Treandos started it when he was five.

“My dad wore bow ties and I wanted to start my own company,” he said.

Since then, he’s been inspired to expand his knowledge of entrepreneurism and help others, too.

“I want to see other business owners that know more than me so I can get more information and grow my business,” he said.

Treandos had a hand-written list of questions for Ms. Thompson.

“How do people know about your business?” he asked.

“Visibility is very important,” she said. “Not just advertising, but it’s important to be out in the community you serve.”

A proud mom watched the interview unfold.

“We are super proud and grateful for his ability to want to talk about his biz and inspire other kids and adults, as well,” she said.

His parents have been helping him pursue is ambitious goals but say he is the one making the decisions and doing the day-to-day work.

“It truly is kid operated,” his mom said.

Treandos is just getting started building his business and his “Business Tips with Treandos” Podcast.

His friends said he’s already made it big.

“They all think I’m famous,” he said smiling.

His parents hope whatever dreams a child has, someone will take the time to invest time and energy into supporting them.

At seven he's already a businessman in the making and a fun young boy, too.

“He has a passion for entrepreneurism, but he’s also a typical kid,” his mom said. “He loves doing backflips and building LEGOs as well.“

It will be a busy summer before he starts second grade.
