FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting Sunday involving a north Georgia police department and a wanted suspect, who apparently shot at law enforcement on two different occasions, state officials confirm.
Officials confirm 28-year-old Jefferey Tyler Aycock was shot and killed at an abandoned property in the 400 block of Chuilo Road in Floyd County. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:15 p.m.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the Marshal's Service and Rome-Floyd SWAT units had been tracking Aycock since last week, when he allegedly shot at officers from a home off Sam Harris Road while they tried to serve him a warrant for probation violation the first time.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's initial investigation, SWAT units tried to make contact with Aycock. But when they tried to get him out of the house, they said he pulled a gun from behind his back. An officer gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon, but when he did not, an officer fired his gun.
Medics were called to the scene, but Aycock, whom the GBI described as a "gang fugitive," was already dead.
Floyd County Police requested the GBI to handle the case. No officers were hurt in the exchange of gunfire.
11Alive's Hope Ford spoke to neighbors near the scene who said a shooting there is one of the last things they would have expected.
"Just something you would never think would happen - would be a shooting up there,” the neighbor said.
The area is quiet, and neighbors said it's the kind of place where most people know each other.
But another neighbor - who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation - said it's not the first time she's seen officers at the home.
“The police has been up there all the time," she said. "I mean, it’s like every couple of months, there’s something going on where this person is in trouble.”
The Floyd County Coroner's Office said Aycock's body will be take to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
Officials confirm two other people were arrested in connection to the shooting - Guy Haney, Jr. and Victoria Shaffer. Both were charged with hindering, apprehension or punishment of a criminal. Neither were issued a bond.
Meanwhile, according to the GBI, this is the 62 officer-involved shooting the agency has been requested to investigate in 2019.
