Wanted gunman arrested in shooting where 13-month-old hit in crossfire

Atlanta Police said the child was hurt following a dispute over minor car damage.

ATLANTA — Two weeks ago, a mom had to flag down an officer for help when her car broke down as she was taking her child to the hospital for a gunshot wound.

Atlanta Police said they've made an arrest in the case, charging 29-year-old Marcell Mayfield on three counts of aggravated assault with the intent to commit murder.

On Sunday, Oct. 6, 11Alive learned the mom flagged down a Georgia State University officer right after the shooting. A spokesperson for the university's police department said the shooting happened off-campus in southwest Atlanta.

However, their officer was in the right place to help get them to Scottish Rite Medical Center, when the mom got stranded with an injured 13-month-old child in tow at Piedmont Avenue and Decatur Street.
