Person killed in Gwinnett County officer-involved shooting; GBI investigating

It happened on Temple Johnson Rd. near Pate Rd.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A person was shot and killed following an incident involving officers from the Gwinnett County Police Department and the Snellville Police Department early Friday morning, police said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a tweet that it is on the scene and investigating the incident that took place on Temple Johnson Road near Pate Road.

According to the Gwinnett Police Corporal Michele Pihera, their officers were requested to assist Snellville police officers at about 4 a.m. with an incident who had exchanged gunfire with their officers.

Police told 11Alive photojournalist Kathy Bourn that the incident had started with an attempted traffic stop by Snellville police officers. When the suspect vehicle did not stop, officers gave pursuit.

The pursuing officers eventually performed a PIT maneuver on the suspect's vehicle. The vehicle ran off the road and into a wooded area.

According to police, the suspect exchanged gunfire with Snellville officers.

When the arrived, Gwinnett officers assisted Snellville officers in surrounding the suspect's vehicle, according to Pihera's release.

Pihera said that while the Gwinnett SWAT team was surrounding the suspect's car, the suspect pointed his firearm out his windshield at officers. A SWAT team member fired a single round at the suspect.

Afterward, Pihera said, the suspect continued to move about inside the car, and at one point, he could be seen moving into the back seat.

A SWAT team vehicle was used by officers to get closer, she said. At that point, officers were able to observe that the suspect was suffering from visible injuries.

Pihera said the officers approached the suspect and called for an ambulance.

According to Pihera, Gwinnett County Fire crews pronounced the suspect deceased. The suspect's name is not presently known.

The GBI has been asked to lead the investigation of the incident.

Pihera said that no officers were injured as a result of the incident.
