Why this petition matters

Started by Brandi Poole

On the night of March 14, 2015, Taylor Swing and Cecily Hamilton were traveling on Gene Nix Road in Cleveland, Georgia when for unknown reasons, Taylor's vehicle left the roadway, careened down an embankment, and came to rest in a deep section of Town Creek.

Cecily and Taylor were both killed, pronounced dead the following morning. The coroner reports that they both drowned, trapped in Taylor's vehicle.

Upon reviewing the scene, it was obvious that the route the vehicle took was an exact path between a tree and the corner of the bridge. This space is wide open on all four corners. Additionally, there is no signage indicating an upcoming single-lane bridge, nor is there any lighting in the area to make the surroundings more visible.

At the bare minimum, there should have been sections of guardrail encompassing the bridge. They should have been installed years ago. While we have no information on the estimated cost of the desired improvements, the more important question is "how much were these two teenage lives worth?" $10,000? $25,000? Even if the guardrails were to cost $1,000,000 to install, would it have been worth it to prevent this tragedy?

Further, while we have no specifics at the moment, it's our understanding that this is not the first accident to occur in this exact location.

We will never truly know the exact events leading up to the accident, but we will forever know that the death of these two bright young lives could have been at the very least limited, if not prevented entirely.

Make the modifications to the bridge, save lives. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
