She once raised money to buy a stranger a bike. Now this jail officer is fighting for her life

Spalding County Detention Officer Amanda Moore once raised money to help a stranger. Years later, the stranger remains thankful, as Moore recovers from a gunshot.

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A Spalding County Detention Officer, shot while sleeping, is known by some as a kind-hearted person willing to help strangers in need.

Investigators say Moore's 16-year-old stepdaughter is the one who pulled the trigger Thursday afternoon. Sheriff Darrell Dix gave an update on her condition, saying her vitals are good and her brain is not swelling.

Some community members know Moore well and say she is constantly trying to help others around her. While researching Moore, 11Alive's Hope Ford came across a Facebook post from 2016 where Moore rallied the community to help a 19-year-old man.

Holly Morris is that young man's mom.

"She is a complete stranger in essence," said Morris. "She did something out of the goodness of her heart to help someone else."

Alex Smith, Morris's son, once worked at the Food Depot in Griffin. While checking out Morris's groceries, she said in the post, he was well-mannered. She then overheard him telling another cashier he walked to work that day because his bike was stolen. Moore then made it her mission to raise money for a new one.

"She got her own money and then raised money from the community," Morris said. "They all came together under her leadership to replace his bike so he would have transportation to get to work."

Smith, now 23, lives in Missouri but told Ford over the phone that he never forgot the surprise.

"It was something really kind that someone did for me," said Smith. "She is a very generous, loving, caring person who is very selfless and always thinks of other people and looks out for other people’s needs."

Smith and his mom both said they were shocked to hear the news that Moore was shot in a crime the sheriff described as cold-blooded and calculated.

"She is definitely in my prayers and I thank her for her act of kindness," Morris said. "We won't ever forget it."

As for Moore's current condition, Sheriff Dix said she's following the doctor's hand movement with her eyes and can breathe on her own.

The sheriff said he will ask the district attorney to prosecute the 16-year-old as an adult because she has yet to deny shooting Moore.
