Police shut down major road investigating kidnapping, assault suspect in Alpharetta

The suspect is wanted in both Alpharetta and Roswell, police said.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A major road in Alpharetta was shut down for hours on Wednesday after police caught up with a kidnapping suspect and then awaited a search warrant to uncover more evidence on the crime.

Police closed Old Roswell Road in both directions between Warsaw Road and Commerce Parkway as they awaited the warrant to search the suspect's home. And they didn't completely leave the area until well into the evening.

It was the previous day that police believe the kidnapping itself happened based on what the victim eventually came forward to tell them.

"The victim reported to us that he was actually forced into another car at gunpoint and taken away by the kidnapping suspect," Alpharetta Department of Public Safety Sgt. Howard Miller said.

The victim told police that the man was driven into the city of Roswell to a location there.

"At some point, the kidnapping victim was able to make his way out, escape, call the police and made a report with us," Miller said. "Our detectives today were following up on that case when they encountered a male that they believed was the suspect involved in the kidnapping."

Police soon learned the suspect was wanted in Roswell on an assault charge. They used that as grounds to stop the suspect and take him into custody.

"Our investigators then began questioning him about the kidnapping that happened in Alpharetta last night," Miller said. "The latest report that I've been given [is] that we now believe that he was a suspect involved in the kidnapping."

He added that the suspect is still being questioned and the investigation is ongoing. The road shutdown that followed on Wednesday evening, Miller says, was out of an abundance of caution as they awaited search warrants.

"Don't know what's in there," Miller said. "Once the detectives get in there, or once SWAT goes in and clears it, detectives will go in, they'll search for items that they're looking for and then hopefully they'll be able to update our community later on what was found and what we're going to do moving forward.

Police still don't have a possible motive in the crome.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
