DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A man who ambushed his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend and shot him dead in front of children will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Charvez Ryals, 41, was found guilty of murder, two counts of felony murder, five counts of aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to children and other weapons charges in the death of 31-year-old Daniel Wise.
According to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, Wise was gunned down last year on March 10 outside his ex-girlfriend's Chupp Road home in Lithonia.
Prosecutors said Wise had driven to the home with Robbie Johnson, his co-worker, to pick up two of the three kids he shared with the woman. But, shortly after getting the kids into the backseat of the car, prosecutors said Wise got into an argument with her.
Prosecutors said Ryals had been watching the unfolding argument; he then ambushed Wise and hit him in the head with a gun.
Wise, prosecutors said, was already bleeding profusely when Ryals fired 13 rounds, hitting him eight times. But, Ryals was not done and turned the gun at Johnson as he sat int he front passenger seat. Johnson, who prosecutors said shielded the kids from the spray of bullets by wedging himself between the two front seats, was shot in the spine, but survived.
Prosecutors said remarkably, Wise was able to get back to the car and drive a short distance before he lost consciousness and crashed.
Ryals, meanwhile, ran off, but later turned himself in after three days.
The jury found Ryals guilty last Thursday for the slew of charges. A DeKalb County judge sentenced him to life plus 65 years.
